Recognized for Expertise in Safari For 9th Consecutive Year
Safari Specialist Ryan Hilton has been named as one of Wendy Perrin’s 2012 Top Travel Specialists in Condé Nast Traveler – an honor readers have bestowed on him since 2003. This year, his specialty in working with families and multi-generational travelers is being acknowledged.
A native Zimbabwean and former safari guide at Londolozi, one of the pioneering game lodges in South Africa’s ecotourism industry, Hilton has been planning safaris for travelers based on his years of expertise and upbringing since 1997.
Ryan and his team work carefully with travelers to fulfill unique requirements and requests while also thoroughly preparing them for their experiences on the ground in Africa.
“We discuss everything in great detail,” says Hilton. “From the traveler’s wildlife and hospitality expectations to photo equipment, packing recommendations, diet restrictions, and most importantly, how to take full advantage of your guide and the resources in camp.”
Aside from Hilton’s product knowledge and ability to match travelers with perfectly suited experiences, advance and focused preparation is one of the primary reasons for working with an experienced safari professional. In addition, Hilton escorts a limited number of travelers each year, and lends his talents documenting the experience on film so travelers can rest easy, knowing they will have professional-quality images to share with family and friends when they return.
Recognition on Perrin’s annual list is no small task.
Travel planners must demonstrate destination knowledge, insider connections, user-friendliness, and value for dollar. “ Of the more than 10,000 travel agents and tour operators who have tried to break onto this list since its inception 13 years ago, only a tiny fraction have made the grade—this year, 150 specialists,” says Perrin. “Getting into this group is, statistically speaking, tougher than getting into Harvard.”
Staying on it is tougher still: It requires not only an absence of valid reader complaints but also ongoing positive assessments from readers.
