An Insiders Looks at The Resort at Paws Up!
In late August ATI’s Michelle Andersen and Alexis Benac had the honor to visit the Resort at Paws Up… and what an honor it was. A luxury ranch resort situated on a sprawling 37,000-acre working cattle ranch in western Montana, The Resort at Paws Up is an undeniably beautiful property set in an even more undeniably beautiful part of the country.
Fondly referred to as “The Last Best Place” the resort has a multitude of activities geared around its natural setting – picture a free flowing river, sprawling hills, and mountains as far as your eyes can see. Anything from fly-fishing and kayaking to extreme sports such as ATV’ing and rappelling down a mountain side can be done at Paws Up, and activities are encouraged for guests to get the full experience of the property. The expansive resort is also a haven for authentic Montana dude ranch activities like trail riding, chuck wagons and cattle drives. There is a fantastic kids program held daily for the little travelers in the group with activities ranging from mountain biking & hiking to nature education and wildlife appreciation.
Types of accommodation: Luxury Homes & Luxury Tents
Our review of the Luxury Home - The homes are very well furnished! We enjoyed a stay in a four bedroom home, complete with four master suites, kitchen, and living room (HUGE Fireplace) mud room, back deck with hot tub and front porch (huge!) with comfy furniture. There is a tent located in the front yard for anyone who wants to get the true camping feel with the creature comforts of a house not far away. The kitchen is well stocked complete with Keurig coffeemaker which is replenished daily. The Master Suites are HUGE with king beds, walk in closets and immense bathrooms complete with one SWEET Jacuzzi tub. Big bonus- the Rain showers are massive!
Our review of the Luxury Tent - The tented camps are very unique – 6 tents to a site with a central community type of center offering tables/chairs/ kitchen area/wifi access/tv/ etc. There are one and two bedroom tents, well furnished with luxury bathrooms – this is glamping not camping after all!
Each accommodation is equipped with your own Green Kia to get from Point A to Point B or you can always call the Butler service, 24/7 who are there to shuttle guests as needed!
Dining & Drinks: There is a casual dining room for breakfast and lunch complete with al fresco area – more formal dining room for dinner. Great bar – full service with wide range of specialty drinks and local craft beers. Food is inspired by the region with produce coming from a local organic farm and offerings such as huckleberry jam, rocky mountain trout, and bison frequently on the revolving menu.
Inclusions: Nightly rates for each accommodation include breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as beverages with meals (soft drinks, water, beer/wine). Rates also include: round-trip transportation service from/to Missoula International Airport; all on-property transportation (complimentary on-property use of a compact car with each cabin, and on-demand transportation services for luxury camping guests); high-speed WIFI internet access; and a vast menu of recreational activities that are included in our rates. Additional guided excursions and adventures, as well as spa services, are available at a-la-carte rates which can be arranged through the Concierge Services team and settled at the end of your stay, allowing each guest to create a customized and flexible itinerary.
Not Included: All other activities i.e. kayaking, rafting, rappelling, cattle drive, horseback riding and ATV are an extra charge. In our opinion - If guests don’t do any of the EXTRAS they have really missed a lot of fun. Liquor is also not included.
What type of traveler would love this property? Any traveler who loves the outdoors and wants an opportunity to experience the wilderness in comfort. Being as the property is expansive, guests are able to have an intimate environmental experience without feeling crowded. The common areas for dining invite camaraderie between guests, so don't be surprised if you leave with new friends to reminisce with. Children’s activities are a huge bonus making it a great destination for the entire family to enjoy. Winter activities are magical for kids of all ages with an outdoor ice skating rink on premise along with the opportunity to ride through the property in a sleigh making Paws Up a year round destination.
Overall we enjoyed our time at The Resort at Paws Up and learned that Kayaks are supposed to go forward facing down the falls, not backwards... but hey it was more fun that way!
